A new US study has contradicted others done earlier last year by concluding that student use of social networking website Facebook has no negative effect on their test and assignment results when compared to non-users.
Conducted by the University of New Hampshire, researchers found “no correlation between the amount of time students spend using social media and their grades.” Sixty-three per cent of heavy users – those logged into Facebook for more than one hour per day – still earned high grades (A’s and B’s). Light users of fewer than 30 minutes per day also received high marks.
“The study indicates that social media is being integrated with, rather than interfering with, students’ academic lives,” said Professor Chuck Martin. “Students have grown up with social networks, and the study shows they are now simply part of how students interact with each other, with no apparent impact on grades.”
