Google is offering free laptops to 600 US schools in an attempt to foster science, technology, engineering, and mathematics skills.
At the end of February, the secondary schools will receive five 15-inch Lenovo laptops, each customised with stick-on graphics and bundled with a Google backpack. Schools were chosen from a list of the United States’ 1,000 top-rated schools.
"These high schools have significant populations of students from under-represented backgrounds as far as technology goes," said Google spokeswoman Emily Wood. "We wanted to look at schools already doing a good job of providing education, not give laptops to just any old school, and to give them an extra boost."
